In The Service Of Worms...For Sponsors / Spiritual

When Irish hearts are happy, All the world seems bright and Gay. Glenn had a happy heart, but make no mistake it was not always so that way. A lawyer by trade he made his living the old fashioned way in the prestigious law firm of Dewey, Cheetam, and Howe.

Glenn would chafe at the death sentence prescribed in the Christian KJV as if by choice and not by birth he had agreed to be one of society’s outcast pariahs. When the cards were dealt and the hands laid out Glenn had a not so straight, queen high flush. On the plus side of the ledger Glenn had a rapier wit, and could find a fault in any needle point argument.

We have found that the larger the mind the more brilliant, and profound when it came to sober recovery, it was often times than not an analytical impediment to the simple program for complicated people. With all the sage wisdom and knowledge from the ages I try and I cry, I can think my way out without any outside help.

In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud: Under the bludgeoning of chance my head is bloody, but unbowed.

It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll; I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. William Ernest Henley

When my fate seems inexorably decreed filed with briers, tars, and weeds and God puts you on your knees, the attitude of gratitude in the service of another will untimely set you free.

The natural man, self-centered, of whom the alcoholic is an extreme example, when an opportunity is perceived the egos first, thought is always, what’s in it for me. My greatest and best good is to crisp green my pocket and remain in the delusion of control. Am I my brother’s keeper? It’s every man for him or her self, its dog eats dog, as long as I remain the wolf on patrol.

Bill W. had stated that A.A. was a spiritual kindergarten.

Early in recovery and new in sobriety Glenn had spotted a worm on the scorching hot summer South Texas pavement, in a moment of reflection he considered his own fate liken unto the lowliest of God’s creatures. The worm would be devoured by a seemly unseen force in the form of a predatory bird, or perhaps even worse, it would fry from the inside out. In a moment of Buddhist compassion for the reverence of all life, he picked one up and cleansed it of its sandy hot grit and placed it back into the cool shaded garden and life. The worm could now fill the measure of its creation and find joy therein. I hear tell in the world of worms that a story unfolds how some were saved by the grace of some unseen and unknown powerful force they choose to call Glenn.

From baby steps to manly strides Glenn now sponsors the others guy and the Big Book is his beacon. The lessons of service comes with the understanding of graciousness, for one cannot exist without the other, the giver as well as the receiver must be in the harmony of agreement for continued spiritual growth and for the grace of God whom I chose to call Jesus.

Sometimes my burdens seem more than I can bear, and I think I will cave under the strain if not the load. My relief always comes when I drop the rock and help someone else, for their yoke is light and the work is sweet, and easy is the tow.

For when I am in the service of my fellow beings am I not in the service of my God, and when I am in that service am I not divorced from self-dilution, self-seeking, and self-pity and in that moment and in that service is that not when I make my conscious contact with my creator, who lives from moment to moment, eternity to eternity, life everlasting. The magic word in A.A. is Action and more Action for faith without works is dead.

In the end when all is said and done, once dead and buried we are simply 'Worm Food'
Such a noble purpose for mankind.
